Key takeaways

Roughly two in three US Google searches now end without a click.

Health queries trigger AI answers more than any other category.

Being cited inside the answer matters more than ranking below it.

Claims discipline is now a visibility asset, not only a compliance task.

The shelf moved

For a decade, we fought for page one. That shelf has moved inside the answer itself. SparkToro’s 2026 study puts US zero-click searches at 68.01%, up from 60.45% in 2024. When an AI Overview appears, click-through to traditional results falls by close to 60%.

Why health feels it first

One 2026 dataset found healthcare queries triggered the most AI Overviews, at 48.75%. BrightEdge puts the figure nearer 63%. The numbers differ by method, but the direction does not. Someone typing “blocked nose at night” increasingly gets a full answer before seeing any brand.

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your brand easy for AI systems to find, trust, cite and recommend. SEO earns a ranking. GEO earns a mention inside the answer.

Four moves for consumer health brands

1. Write answers, not adverts

Lead each page with a plain, direct answer to one real question. Fact-style queries such as definitions and comparisons triggered AI Overviews 93–97% of the time in one April 2026 analysis.

2. Make claims consistent everywhere

AI systems assemble your brand from pack copy, retailer listings, FAQs and press. One approved claim, repeated identically, is easier to cite than five variations.

3. Show up where engines look

Peec AI found Google’s AI surfaces leaned on YouTube, Reddit and Facebook, while ChatGPT favoured Wikipedia, Reddit and Forbes. Pharmacist videos and credible community presence now feed search.

4. Measure mentions, not only clicks

Seer Interactive reports that brands cited in AI Overviews saw 35% higher organic click-through. Track citation share by platform alongside traffic.

Test it in your own market

Most published data on AI search is US-based. Language, platforms and regulation vary by country, so treat these numbers as a direction, not a forecast. The practical step is the same anywhere: run your consumers’ top 20 questions through the main AI tools, in the local language, every month. Record whether your brand appears, and whether what is said about it is accurate.

The window is open

Only 37% of marketers are optimising content for AI search, per UserTesting’s 2026 survey. That gap will close. Brands that become the trusted source now will be hard to displace later.

FAQ

What is zero-click search?

A search where the user gets the answer on the results page and visits no website.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI answers still draw on well-ranked, well-structured pages. GEO builds on SEO.

How do I check my brand’s AI visibility?

Ask the main AI tools your consumers’ top questions and record whether, and how accurately, your brand appears.
